Ten Questions with Rod Hatley

Check out this 10 Question Q&A Session with Rod to get to know him a little better. Rod has a diversity of interests outside of his legal practice.

For example, this photo is of Rod (center) and his improv troupe from September 2016 at the National Comedy Theatre in San Diego.

1. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. Interesting background:  My father was a naval officer who was stationed at Naval Air Station Memphis, which is located in Millington, Tennessee, where I was born.  Then my father received orders to San Diego, where my sister was born.  Now I live in San Diego and my sister lives in Memphis. Go figure.

2. How many siblings do you have?
Just one sister. She’s married and is a practicing optometrist. Her son (my nephew) shares my birthday. He is a sophomore in high school and learning to drive (and driving my sister crazy in the process).

3. What are your favorite pastimes?
I enjoy surfing (which I do very badly); I am an open water certified scuba diver, though I don’t do nearly enough of that; and I have jumped out of an airplane.

4. When you were a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I became a scuba diver because I wanted to be Jacques Cousteau. He helped invent the aqualung. ABC TV used to air “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” when I was a kid growing up in Memphis back in the 1960s and 1970s. I thought it was fascinating and decided that I had to learn how to scuba dive.

5. What is your favorite place to travel and why?
I fell in love with San Francisco, and California, when I was in the Navy and stationed at Treasure Island. I enjoy going to the Bay Area whenever I can.

6. What is your favorite movie?
The Godfather. No less than the late, great director Stanley Kubrick opined that the film had the best cast ever and could be the best movie ever made. I agree.

7. What is one thing you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had the time?
I would like to dive the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

8. Which historical figure would you like most to meet?
I’ve heard that you shouldn’t meet your heroes because you’ll likely be disappointed. That said, I would have loved to have been in the control room at Abbey Road Studio Number 2 when John Lennon and George Harrison were alive and recording with The Beatles.

9. What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part of the job is making a difference in my client’s lives and those of their children.

10. What is one fact that not a lot of people know about you?
I enjoy improv. I took an improv course at the Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles when I was in the Navy and stationed in the High Desert of California back in the mid-1990s.  I started doing it again in the past year with the National Comedy Theatre in San Diego. I’m not ready for prime time, but I enjoy it. And when I’m able to get the audience to laugh, it’s music to my ears.
